Sperm Motility Only 20%, Two Years of Trying Without Success

26-Year-Old Ms. Li Welcomes a Healthy Baby at Jetanin

26-year-old Ms. Li had been unable to conceive after two years of marriage. Due to irregular menstruation, she was diagnosed at a local obstetrics and gynecology clinic with "ovulatory infertility" and took ovulation-inducing medication for over a year.

Although her periods became more regular, her menstrual flow became lighter and darker in color, and she still did not conceive. Prolonged failure to become pregnant increased the couple's anxiety.

Later, on a friend's recommendation, Ms. Li came to the Jetanin Institute for Reproductive Medicine in Thailand to further investigate the underlying causes of infertility.

After Comprehensive Testing, the Real Problem Was Finally Found

At Jetanin, the medical team did not rush to continue ovulation induction. Instead, they arranged a complete infertility workup for both partners, including:

  • Female hormone and ovarian reserve assessment
  • Tubal patency test
  • Semen analysis
  • Infection screening

The results showed that Ms. Li had a chlamydia infection, and more critically, her husband's sperm motility was only about 20%, well below the normal standard.

The doctor explained that prolonged infertility in many couples is not solely due to female ovulation issues; male sperm quality is also a key factor. Especially when sperm motility is low, fertilization rates and embryo quality can be significantly affected.

Considering the couple's overall situation, the Jetanin team believed that continuing to try natural conception or simple artificial insemination would not only have limited success but could also waste valuable time.

Third-Generation IVF with ICSI Successfully Produces High-Quality Embryos

Therefore, Ms. Li was advised to proceed directly with third-generation IVF/ICSI treatment combined with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) to improve fertilization rates and embryo quality.

Ms. Li began the ovarian stimulation cycle. After more than ten days of stimulation, the doctor successfully retrieved several mature eggs.

Meanwhile, the laboratory team strictly screened the sperm, selecting healthy sperm with good morphology and motility from a large pool. Using ICSI, a single sperm was precisely injected into each egg to achieve fertilization.

After fertilization, the embryos were cultured in the lab and subjected to rigorous selection and observation, ultimately forming high-quality blastocysts.

Healthy Embryo Successfully Implants, Bringing the Long-Awaited Good News

Subsequently, the doctor performed an embryo transfer for Ms. Li. Fortunately, one of the healthy embryos implanted successfully.

When the pregnancy test came back positive, the couple was overcome with emotion, tears streaming down their faces. After months of anxiety and repeated failures, they finally received the news they had been hoping for.

The rest of the pregnancy went smoothly, and she eventually gave birth to a healthy baby.

Many Infertility Issues Are Not Solely Due to Female Factors

In reality, when couples fail to conceive, many immediately attribute the problem to female ovulation. But clinically, the true causes of infertility are often only discovered when both partners are examined together.

Especially:

  • Low sperm motility
  • Abnormal sperm quality
  • Tubal issues
  • Chronic infections
  • Poor embryo quality

These factors can all affect the final pregnancy outcome.

Therefore, if you have been trying to conceive for over a year without success, it is advisable to undergo a comprehensive reproductive evaluation as early as possible to identify the true cause, thereby increasing the chances of pregnancy more effectively.

Often, finding the right problem is more important than blindly persisting.
